We got to catch a few shows at the 30A Songwriters Festival over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, which wasn’t nearly enough. Nikki Hedrick’s 30A Fest recap appears in this issue’s Music section.
Editor Manson catches up with 30A Fest veteran Gretchen Peters, who performed with Barry Walsh, Rita Wilson and Chris Stills at Rosemary Beach Town Hall. To our guy’s delight, Ms. Peters closed her set with one of Manson’s favorites, “Five Minutes.”
Kathy Mattea’s sole performance during the fest, at The Hub 30A, included enduring hits like “18 Wheels and a Dozen Roses” and “Where’ve You Been.” Even better, Ms. Mattea played several songs from her superb 2008 album COAL and a jaw-dropping rendition of 30A Fest veteran Mary Gauthier’s “Mercy Now.”
Editor Manson sought out Rita Wilson because he loved her recent self-titled album, plus she co-starred in the 1994 movie MIXED NUTS, a staple at the Manson-Hilton household every Christmas. Ms. Wilson graciously autographed Paula Hilton’s DVD copy, and we are eternally grateful.
