Alias Grace

Margaret Atwood is having a moment. Yet another one of her novels—this one written in the mid-‘90s—has been brought to the tube, this time courtesy of Netflix. Unlike Atwood’s futuristic story turned Emmy-winning Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale, Netflix’s six-part series is based on real events set in the 19th century. It’s the tale of Grace Marks, a young household worker imprisoned for the murder of her boss, and the ensuing efforts to free her. This includes detailed interviews with an American psychiatrist who tries to figure out if Grace is the killer. Along the way, viewers get a glimpse of Grace’s flashbacks, including barbaric psychiatric treatments and reenactments of the murder. All the while, we’re compelled to ponder the age-old murder-mystery question, “Who dunnit?”
