“My mother and I attended a Christmas craft show in Nashville last year, and we ran across an adorable Nashville coloring book,” says Noelle Tabor, who assumes the “imagined by” credit on The 30A Coloring Book. The illustrations are by Ginny-Beth Joiner. A copy showed up on my desk after I stumbled across the 30A Coloring Book Instagram. I wanted to know more.
“I was drawn to (the Nashville book) and wanted to buy it for someone, but realized that most of the people I love have a connection to 30A more so than Nashville,” Ms. Tabor says. She reached out to the creator of the Nashville book to see if they could work together, but they were focused on other projects.
“So I thought, Why not me?”
Ms. Tabor began to search for an illustrator to bring the project from dream to printed page. “That same day, one of my sorority sisters posted an illustration she’d done on Facebook, and everything fell magically into place.”
Ms. Tabor and Ms. Joiner attended college together at the University of West Florida, where both were members of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Ms. Tabor insisted that the 30A book be 100 percent hand illustrated in Florida. “It was important to me that we produce something that would reflect the quality experience that 30A provides as a destination, and we’ve done that. The book includes 40 of Ginny-Beth’s illustrations, covering sites from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach and everything in-between.”
The illustrator now lives in Deland, Florida, where she works as a director for a university. “She loves to educate others, but she also loves to be creative,” says Ms. Tabor. “She has a small business called Martha MacGyver, which was a moniker given to her by one of our other sorority sisters for her ability to make crafty things from nothing.” (Find ShopMarthaMac on Facebook.)
The 30A Coloring Book initially went to press in April of this year. “We sold through our first print during the summer season and printed what we call ‘V2’,” says Ms. Tabor. The second version boasts a new illustration, a hand-illustrated binding and “a couple of new surprises.”
Ms. Tabor wants to continually evolve the book so that “people who visit each year are met with something new. New surprises, new things to color.”
The 30A Coloring Book is available online at the30acoloringbook.com and locally at Twin Oaks Farmstead, The Hidden Lantern, Bungalow, The Blue Giraffe, Deep South Market (Seagrove Beach and Gulf Place locations), Salt Air, Sundog Books, Duckies, and Big Mama’s Hulu Gallery.
