The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)
The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is a new comedic drama written and directed by Noah Baumbach. Starring Dustin Hoffman, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and more, the film follows three adult siblings who have to come together to take care of their father, a stubborn, aging artist, as they prepare for a retrospective celebrating his sculptural work. The cast has incredible chemistry, exuding a sense of familial warmth and tension. It is a witty and truly touching film about dysfunctional family dynamics, pride, and love.

Our Souls at Night
Although stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda are easily recognizable, the plot is a bit more obscure…if you can even call it that. Our Souls at Night is the story of how two aging neighbors, each widowed, came to sleep together at night for companionship and nothing more. At least that was the plan going in. The movie’s first hour could have probably been whittled down, as most of the flick’s significant happenings occur in the faster-moving final 30 minutes or so. Still, it’s a warm and fuzzy charmer of a tale that clearly demonstrates that though the body may age, the heart never grows old. If you’re looking for a rainy day triple feature, Netflix is currently offering a couple of older Redford-Fonda flicks, Barefoot in the Park and The Electric Horseman. The latter is especially worth checking out.
Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show
The eight-episode primetime sketch show had more in common with SCTV and Monty Python’s Flying Circus than SNL, and absolutely nothing in common with its Tuesday night lead-in Home Improvement. With a creative team that included Robert Smigel, Louis CK and Charlie Kaufman, you’d suspect that much of the comedy would hold up 20 years later, and you’d be right. Any show that gave the world Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert—whose “Waiters Who Are Nauseated by Food” may be the funniest thing to air on TV since I’ve been alive—deserves to be celebrated. Bonus—you can watch all the Dana Carvey Show episodes (including the final one that never aired on ABC) on Hulu after you finish the documentary. And you’ll want to.
