Walter Becker, R.I.P.

Published on

Renowned Beachcomberland musician (among other things) Shannon Wallace writes:

I was on a business trip to Anaheim, California, at the Audio Engineering Society Convention with my manufacturing company, Truth Audio. We were demoing a newly-designed studio speaker system.

A very unassuming guy was standing at our booth listening to Truth Audio speakers. I introduced myself, and he said, “I am Walter.” I asked if he’d like to hear anything specific on our speaker system. He responded, “You got any Steely Dan?” I responded, “I have all of it.”

So I cued up a couple tracks from the Aja album as he got comfortable and sat down with me. He listened to almost half the album.

I asked him, “So how do you like the speakers?” He responded, “That’s how the record was intended to sound when we recorded it.” The light bulb went on over my head as I tried to not act excited.

“Are you Walter fucking Becker of Steely Dan?”

He laughed and said, “Yes, and I want a pair of your speakers.”

I shipped him a set of Truth Audio speakers as soon as I got back to Florida. Walter Becker was a very humble and nice guy. He also molded music all through my life and continues to inspire.
