The Other End, Destin
Josh and wife Britney moved to Destin from Orlando last August after visiting here just a few times. “I’ve always wanted to live by the beach, and the Destin area is where we agreed on,” says Josh. They saved up and came here with a two-month-old baby and no jobs.
Josh quickly landed a gig at the Other End and was drawn to its unique vibe. “It’s Destin’s only beer garden and is best known for its award-winning gourmet burgers and hand cut duck fat fries (served) out of an airstream trailer as a kitchen,” he says. The Destin Harbor spot specializes in craft beer, with 16 beers on draft and a variety of 50 different bottles. “We try to feature as many of the local breweries as possible but also focus on variety with our beer selection. We use smaller one-sixth barrel kegs so we can constantly have something new and exciting on draft. You can come multiple times a week, and our draft selection won’t ever look the same.”
His role is “working manager,” meaning Josh is responsible for ordering and selecting beers, writing schedules, hiring and training, plus all the day-to-day front of house tasks. He’s also behind the Other End’s bar five nights a week serving guests. “Before I moved to Destin, I held almost every title you can hold in the restaurant and bar business. I started at the host stand, and have since bussed, served, bartended and managed.”
Josh says being behind a busy bar is where he’s most comfortable. “If I’m having fun behind the bar, then guests are having fun. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing all of their crazy stories.”
His hobbies include paddleboarding and being by the water. An avid sports fan, Josh roots for the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Saints. He is quick to add that most of his free time is spent with son Easton. “We’re first time parents, and everyday is something new, amazing and challenging. And we both love it.”
