What started as a lifelong passion for baking and decorating has slowly blossomed into a thriving company. Sarah Dewey founded Coastal Cookies in 2016 after co-workers saw her adorable cookie creations online.

Coastal Cookies specializes in custom-ordered sugar cookies and cupcakes that are homemade and intricately hand-decorated. Cookies can be created for your next birthday party, bridal shower, holiday gift or celebration based on theme, desired color palette and special requests.

Dewey, a native of Birmingham, Michigan, moved to Destin during the summer of 2011. She worked for an uncle who owned a daiquiri bar and planned on returning to Michigan State at the end of the summer. Fate got in the way, and Dewey met her now-fiancé Jason. Her parents moved to Destin last year.

Dewey then worked as a local licensed real estate agent. She began creating cookies for open houses and closings. “Creating custom cookies became a passion,” she says. Business became so good that Dewey decided to leave her real estate job to devote more time to Coastal Cookies.

Coastal Cookies currently operates as a legal Cottage Food Business in the state of Florida, allowing Dewey to only accept local orders. She delivers the cookie orders herself or can meet people at local businesses. Cookies can be ordered seven days a week. There is an additional charge for delivering outside a certain radius.

“I currently do about three to four custom orders a week,” says Dewey. “The process takes a lot of time. My mother is my number-one employee.”

She specializes in sugar cookies with royal icing. Dewey creates many of the designs for the cookies herself. She is also beginning to create cupcakes and cakes now that she is working with the business full time.

She recently created a special order cake for Leigh Anne Tuohy, who was portrayed by Sandra Bullock in the movie The Blind Side.

“The next step is renting commercial kitchen space,” says Dewey. “Someday I would love to own my own bakery.”

Up next for Dewey is a back to school celebration at the Grand Boulevard Farmers Market Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. She will be there with specially decorated items symbolizing the return to the classroom. She would like to do more farmers markets, maybe two Saturdays a month.

Future plans for Coastal Cookies include children’s birthday parties—with the kids decorating cookies—and baking classes aimed at teenagers and adults. Dewey is also working on a home DIY cookie kit.

This cookie artist enjoys making people happy with her sweet creations. “It has been a fun journey so far,” says Dewey. “I’m just at the start of a new chapter in my life.”
