William (Bill) Turner retired from the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant and immediately made the Emerald Coast his permanent home. But this was home long before he retired.
“I spent 19 years and three months based at Hurlburt Field, in two separate assignments,” Bill explains. “I first arrived for assignment in June 1991 and left in June 2007. I returned in December 2010, and departed March 2014.”
Bill ended up spending most of his adult life here. He met and married Stacey Woodward, a Fort Walton Beach native. Bill has lived in Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Hurlburt Field over the years, and his passion for the area has never been stronger. “I tell people all the time that I am never leaving again, and I never will. This is home,” he says.
“I absolutely love the community and the people that call this area home. I have traveled the world, and there is no place I would rather live out the rest of my days. The premium this community places on family and our great military far surpasses any place I have ever lived. Besides the obvious draw of our beautiful beaches and bayous, there are many special people and places that serve to make this a unique and exciting place to live, work and raise a family.”
William served our country for 30 years in the Air Force. His final assignment was serving as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Prior to serving at USTRANSCOM, he was Command Chief Master Sergeant for Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) at Hurlburt Field.
Bill currently serves as one of the executive directors of the Air Commando Association (ACA) Board of Directors. The ACA is a nonprofit veterans organization whose mission is to honor Air Commandos who have helped make this nation great. Their goal is to showcase the many achievements and deeds of special operations, and to preserve the group’s memory, achievements and contributions through memorials and overseeing the election of members to the Air Commando Hall of Fame.
Bill Turner takes great pride in being a part of the ACA. “AFSOC’s air commandos and special operations units play a crucial role in not only protecting the world with military operations, but also having a positive economic, political and humanitarian impact on all those they interact with, both here at home and abroad.”
Since his retirement, Bill has dedicated himself to the needs of children who have no one to protect them from abuse and neglect. He serves as an Okaloosa County Guardian ad Litem. The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program is a powerful voice that is an advocate for Florida’s abused, abandoned and neglected children.
