“Fritz was one of those people you meet that becomes an instant friend. One of the funniest people I have ever met. A genuinely kind soul that always put others ahead of himself. Those who knew him will all say they were blessed to have him as a friend. He will never be forgotten.”
– Brandon Day
To me, he was and always will be just Fritz. Only recently did I learn he had a proper last name, and it wasn’t “The Bartender.”
Fritz lost his battle with cancer on Friday, April 14.
I didn’t know Fritz nearly as well as some of the folks that frequented the Swizzle Stick Lounge on Okaloosa Island, where he tended bar for as long as I can remember. But he always knew my drink, treated me and my friends like family, and made me want to take up residence there and become a full-on barfly.
I don’t remember the first time I met him or the last time I saw him, just all those moments in between. And they were all good.
Chris Hayes, a very close friend of Fritz’s, informs me that a celebration of the man’s life is set for Thursday, April 27, from noon to 3 p.m. on the beach behind the Best Western on Okaloosa Island.
A reception will follow at the Swizzle Stick, appropriately enough.
