Congrats, Destin Desserts Winners!

Published on

The Girl Scouts of the Florida Panhandle held their Sixth Annual Destin Desserts competition at the Palms of Destin, with area chefs showcasing their talents by creating original desserts using legendary Girl Scout cookies as the main ingredient.

Guests got to sample the creative and delectable desserts and cast votes for this year’s Grand Champion.

The 2017 Grand Champion is Kevin Wynn of the Black Pearl on Okaloosa Island. Wynn used Thin Mint cookies to create an eye-catching, mouth-watering Thin Mint cheesecake—Thin Mint cookie crust topped with vanilla crème, whipped cream, and homemade macadamia Thin Mint brittle.

Second place winner went to Chef Daniel Soto of Niceville’s Café Rico. He concocted a Brownie beanie emulation on a large scale, then small beanie samples for tasting. Using Toffee Tastic cookies, Soto named his creation Toffee Tastic Teenie Beanie. A spin on traditional tres leches, Soto’s version used layers of sweet soaked cake, Toffee Tastic crumble and vanilla mousse, topped with a handcrafted toffee beanie.

Third place honors went to Chef Mat Von Eberstein, pastry chef from Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s in Destin. His innovative use of the Trefoil cookie was named Orange Trefoil Tiramisu and was heavily layered, resulting in strong visual appeal. The dessert was garnished with candied orange zest.

Other participants were Christopher Rakas of Aegean, Dominic Damiano of Clemenza’s, Allen Tueton of Jackacudas, and Christopher Holbrook of Signature Catering of 30A.

Proceeds benefited the Girl Scouts’ Camp Kolomoki, a 1,600-acre site located just west of DeFuniak Springs in Walton County. Mother Nature caused water erosion and complete washouts to the camp’s main road, causing Camp Kolomoki to be closed a few years ago. Funds will go toward the completion of repairs and re-opening.

There are more than 5,000 Girl Scouts in the Florida Panhandle division and over three million worldwide. Visit gscfp.org for more info.
