The City of Destin has awarded April Nickens the 2016 Employee of the Year Award, the city’s top staff honor. Nickens was presented the award at the city’s annual Christmas Party and was recognized for her accomplishment by the mayor and city council at the January 3 council meeting.
Nickens joined the city in March 2015 as the accounts payable administrator in the finance department. She is responsible for performing administrative duties and serves as the primary point of contact between the finance department and the city’s vendors. Under the direction of the finance director, Nickens performs a variety of accounting-related activities such as purchase order processing, accounts payable processing and staff payroll.
“I am honored and humbled by this award,” says Nickens. “I attribute my success to my coworkers and the wonderful work environment at the city of Destin. I work with the best team ever, and I look forward to many more years of service.”
“April is an exceptional employee,” says City Manager Carisse LeJeune. “She has a great attitude and can always be depended upon to get the job done, even when extra effort is required. April possesses excellent customer service skills, with both internal and external customers, and she is always willing to assist others. The City of Destin is blessed to have April as part of our team.”
Nickens also received a certificate of recognition from Congressman Jeff Miller, her name etched on a plaque and a reserved parking place at City Hall for 2017.
The Employee of the Year is selected by a committee from nominations made by coworkers. The award is given to the individual who best exemplifies the city’s staff mission to provide quality service to the community through professionalism, communication and teamwork.
