EDITOR’S PICKS – FUNNY PEOPLE
The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo
Even if you’re a devoted viewer of her excellent Comedy Central show, you’ll be surprised by how many layers the author reveals in her sorta-memoir. There are plenty of laughs here—no surprise—but also some thoughtful (and painful) pieces on abusive relationships and the need for sensible gun laws. Of particular interest to me was the chapter about her dealings with a Men’s Health magazine editor. Amy, you can write for Beachcomber any time you want, and I won’t give you a bunch of shit. I recommend the Audible version, for which Schumer has found the perfect narrator—herself.
Best. State. Ever. A Florida Man Defends His Homeland
G.P. Putnam’s Sons
In Barry, Tim Dorsey and Carl Hiaasen—whose new Razor Girl I’m still in the middle of—Florida can boast three of the United States’ funniest writers, so suck it rest of the country. This is a breezy and hilarious travelogue in which Barry visits some well-known and off-the-wall Sunshine State spots to hilarious effect, though I don’t know what kept him away from the Emerald Coast.
Charles M. Schulz
The Complete Peanuts: 1999 to 2000
The final volume in Fantagraphics’ superb series reveals that Schulz’s final strips were a lot funnier than I remembered. Also includes the pre-Peanuts comic Li’l Folks, which provides a fascinating look at Schulz’s development as cartoonist, gag man and social commentator. Plus a foreword by the second worst president of the current century.
