By Bruce Collier
It was sometime around 2004 or 2005. I was in the parking lot of a restaurant that has since vanished (literally off the face of the earth). I was waiting for a friend to pick me up, and a car pulled up. The couple in it (man and woman) asked me if the restaurant was open. It wasn’t, but I had reviewed it and told them when it would be open. They asked, “Is it any good?” I was able to give them a detailed description of the atmosphere, service, prices, and my favorite menu items. I think they were expecting a simple yes or no.
“Thanks. Sounds like you really liked it,” said the man.
“I reviewed it,” I said.
“For that,” I said, pointing to their backseat, where they had the latest copy of The Beachcomber. They opened it and found my dining review column, which was then called “The Apples of My Eye.”
“Are you Bruce Collier?”
“Yes, I am,” I said. “Glad to be of service.”
