The Beat Profiles* — Huck and Lilly

Published on

HOME: We’re from Nashville, but we also have a house in Seagrove.

AGE: Timeless. Age appropriate.

PROFESSION: Singer‑songwriters and entertainers. We make music for kids and the grownups who love them. We also write songs for contemporary adult artists, including Chris Janson. We’re also on the CMT TV series I Love Kellie Pickler. Lilly (Andi Zack‑Johnson) and Kellie are best friends in real life. Season two premieres in August.

HOBBIES: Huck (Ken Johnson) has a food blog called HillbillySupperClub.com, which is tied to the CMT series. Andi is a gardening genius and has her own gardening blog, thechampangegarden.com. Her garden measures about 50 feet.

LAST BOOK READ: The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, PhD (Andi). To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway (Ken).

LAST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Ken had three back‑to‑back number‑one songs on the Texas music charts. Andi shot and directed four music videos that were broadcast on CMT and released a solo album, Love Party, in 2015.

QUOTE: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” – Seneca, Roman philosopher.

PROFILE: We were at Seaside in front of the Pizza Bar with a pizza and a ukulele when a fiddler crab ran by and Andi jumped on Ken’s head and screamed. Andi’s Canadian, so she thought it was a spider. She didn’t understand why it was called a fiddler crab since it didn’t play the fiddle. And that inspired the first kids’ song we wrote (on 2015’s There’s a Tree Growing in My Room).

Ken sings and plays guitar, and his influences include John Prine, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. Andi sings and plays ukulele, conch shell, kazoo and lots of percussion instruments. Her influences include Ingrid Michaelson, John Denver and Vince Gill. We have two kids, ages 16 and 12, but if you count Huck and Lilly fans, we have hundreds.

FAVORITE FREE ENTERTAINMENT PUBLICATION: The Beachcomber!

Huck and Lilly perform Fridays at Fudpucker’s in Destin starting at 4:20 p.m. They also play at the Seaside Amphitheater Tuesday, July 19, at 5:30 p.m. More at huckandlilly.com.
