Orson Welles, Volume 3: One-Man Band

This is the third of a planned four-volume biography of Welles by actor-director-author Callow, who began the project in 1997. Callow is incapable of writing an uninteresting book, littering his works with insights, challenges and fresh perspectives. He set himself a mighty task here, trying to answer the eternal Welles question, “What went wrong after Citizen Kane?” Callow’s answer seems to be “Nothing. Everything.” The fault, if any, would appear to be one of character. The world can be tough on people who refuse to compromise, especially (as with Welles) when they’re spending other people’s money.
