The first time my artwork was on the cover of The Beachcomber, it was 2006 and early in my watercolor art experience. I was thrilled then and am thrilled now to have the opportunity to be on the cover again, but after painting 10 more years it is more of an honor as well. There are so many talented artists in our area, and being selected to showcase on The Beachcomber is extra special.
“Abstract Sailboats” (on this issue’s cover) was painted in 2015. I was trying to show that the sky does not always need to be painted horizontally, and colors can be used that may not normally appear with a particular subject matter. It’s always fun to experiment with techniques and color to come up with a looser, new style that becomes your own.
I grew up around the Chesapeake Bay, and there were always lots of sailboat races to watch. I try to teach lots of different techniques in my classes, and we always try to use lots of vivid colors.
There are so many artists in the area that are my inspiration and teachers. I admire the plein air painters who can paint a likeness to what they are viewing while outside, the pastel painters who can paint such wonderful beach scenes and not end up with the paint all over their faces as I do, the oil painters who capture the nature in our area, and the mixed media painters who come up with such interesting abstracts using varied materials.
I teach classes in watercolor and basket weaving at the Bayou Arts Center throughout the year. During Snowbird season, I teach additional classes at different locations in the area. I provide all materials, and the student always goes home with a finished painting or basket at the end of the class.
Mother’s Day weekend will find me at Arts Quest at Grand Boulevard, with paintings and baskets in the Members Art Tent. I will also be demonstrating basket weaving the entire weekend there. This photo is an example of a pine needle, but I also weave with reed and grapevines.
