Thanks to Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, orchestrating a family outing al fresco style during the summer is a breeze.
This year MKAF presents its 21st Annual Concerts in the Village series every Thursday from May 5 through June 30 at the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village in Destin.
Some of the finest local and regional touring artists will hit the Dugas Pavilion stage to perform everything from Motown, rhythm and blues, jazz and funk to classic and modern rock. This year’s showcase roster includes a variety of talented bands paying tribute to music legends like Santana, Joe Cocker, Journey and Johnny Cash…even Elvis is expected to make an appearance!
The 2016 season schedule opens May 5 with The House Rockers, whose specialty is Mississippi blues. On May 12, the Emerald Coast’s premier party band Moos Bros. performs, followed by Motown revue Emerald Gold May 19 and Supernatural, a Santana tribute band, May 26.
June’s lineup includes ‘70s soul-funk-disco machine Lava Lamp (June 2), Journey tribute band Faithfully (June 9), The Joe Band (paying tribute to the late Mr. Cocker) June 16, and The Maxx (oldies and pop tunes) June 23.
The June 30 finale headliner is Todd Allen Herendeen, whose Legends in Concert pays homage to such greats as Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley.
“Music is an art form that connects us all,” says MKAF CEO Marcia Hull. “If you haven’t come to the Concerts in the Village or haven’t been in a while, we invite you to gather with us among family and friends for a true summertime celebration of music, food and fun.”
Gates open at 6 p.m. and concerts start at 7 for this come-as-you-are family-friendly outdoor concert series.
Bring a lawn chair, picnic and wine or purchase soft drinks and dinner prepared by a featured restaurant or food trucks on site. Admission is $12 for adults—children 12 and under and MKAF members get in FREE.
A limited number of VIP Tables are available to MKAF members for the nine-week concert season for $950 (includes admission, reserved table and seating for up to eight guests). These are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 850-650-2226 to inquire about membership or to purchase a VIP table.
“No question about it, the arts are integral to having a whole community,” says Hull. “All of MKAF’s signature cultural events go a long way towards funding empowering arts programming for children, youth and adults with special needs, and emerging therapeutic programs for our local disabled veterans. Our one-of-a kind outreach program, All Kinds of Art, is truly dedicated to serving all kinds of populations with impactful arts experiences.”
Other signature events slated for MKAF’s 2016 season include the Eighth Annual Labor Day Weekend Concert Sept. 4), the 21st Annual Festival of the Arts Oct. 29 and 30, and the 21st Annual Sounds of the Season at Village Baptist Church in Destin Dec. 2.
The Concerts in the Village series is made possible by the generous support of local individuals, businesses and media partners.
